- Three companies responded to a County “request for proposals” for broadband consulting, with three respondents. An unnamed committee selected Finley Engineering. Not included in the packet, but mentioned in a memo to the County Commission, is a $150,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture award that will be used to fund the project. The company is to assess the holes in broadband service throughout the county, to recommend how to provide coverage and to recommend funding sources for building the infrastructure.
- A resolution seeks to change the pronghorn hunting season from August to October. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish changed the pronghorn hunting season to August the resolution states, when regular 100-degree weather will stress the pronghorn and hunters.
- A resolution seeks to limit Holloman Air Force Base’s plans to extend F16 flight training to Talon Air Force Base, also called Alternative 1 in the Air Force’s recent round of informational sessions on its Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Alternative 2 and Alternative 3 would extend training flights over the Rio Grande Valley and Gila National Forest.
- A resolution supports the State creating a Spaceport America Welcome Center in Truth or Consequences. The resolution states the State appropriated $15 million in 2011 to envision the “visitor experience” that would be multi-day, bringing tourism dollars to the County, part of which was a welcome center and tour depot. Most of the money was diverted to building a southern road, the resolution states. “Studies over the last decade predict up to 500,000 visitors a year to Spaceport America,” it states.
