Season’s greetings from the editorial team and the board of directors of the Sun. We wish you peaceful enjoyment of the holidays and a renewal of energy and hope, girding you to meet the challenges of a new year.
We at the Sun are also taking a break to relax and rejuvenate. Look for us to resume publication on Monday, Jan. 4.
Since the Sun’s relaunch as a not-for-profit civic news organization in mid-October, chief reporter Kathleen Sloan, a growing team of volunteer citizen journalists and your humble volunteer editor have worked hard to keep you informed about your county and/or your city government. In the past nine and a half weeks, the Sun has posted 40 hard news stories. That’s an average of four stories a week about governmental actions of which you, in most instances, would not otherwise have been made aware.
Yesterday’s top story on the new civic center envisioned for Truth or Consequences without any public input or vetting is just the most recent example of the enterprising watchdog journalism that is the Sun’s exclusive turf.
Here are a few other examples of our investigative reporting. We dug into the causes of the mid-summer flooding of Williamsburg and western T or C . . . exposed Elephant Butte’s inadequate accounting of its expenditure of a $600,000 taxpayer-financed loan. . . disclosed Spaceport America’s lack of a strategic plan to guide its ongoing multimillion-dollar capital investments . . . detailed how and when broadband services were coming to southern Sierra County . . . identified the 32 small business in the county that qualified for a CARES grants . . . and laid out the pluses and minuses of converting Sierra Vista Hospital into a special hospital district.
In addition, we’ve broadened our coverage to include editorials, editorial cartoons, guest columns and features—all on issues of significant public interest.
We’ve done all of this on a shoestring budget, with funds donated by folks like you who believe that the free flow of reliable information about public affairs in Sierra County is vital to our community’s well-being. If you’ve read this far, we know you value our work.
Thank you; it’s nice to be appreciated.
But, quite honestly, we also need your financial support.
If you haven’t yet contributed to our ongoing operation, won’t you please consider making a year-end gift? Your tax-deductible donation of any amount will help keep the Sun on the beat and ensure that access to our website remains free to all.
We’ve made it easy to contribute. Just return to our home page and click on the “Become a Supporter” button. With sincere gratitude, we will add your name to the honor roll of donors posted on our website.
Merry Christmas to the staff of the Sun.
You have brightened up my year!
Thank you.
