The Sierra County Commission voted unanimously not to award an $18,000 contract, with travel expenses and other fees to be added, to American Stewards of Liberty at the Sept. 17 regular meeting.
Commission Chairman James Paxon said he had spoken with various officials having knowledge of the company and they did not recommend it.
Commission Vice Chairman Travis Day agreed. He spoke with soil and water districts in Dona Ana County. “It’s a lot of money for nothing,” he was told.
On its webpage American Stewards states it is “a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting private property rights, defending the use of our land, and restoring local control.” It also touts court successes resulting in limiting requirements to protect endangered species and habitat.
Earlier in the meeting Paxon and Day both reported their monitoring of federal Wilderness Act and Wild and Scenic Rivers Act designations that are under consideration that may affect Sierra County property owners. Both expressed support for protection of private property rights and preserving the history and culture of ranching.
