Today the purchase price was made known; $950,000 for the building and land, leaving $1.2 million for the design, up-fit and equipment.
The County Commission approved the purchase agreement at the Nov. 19 morning meeting, stating the closing was scheduled for 2 p.m. in the afternoon. The seller was the “Amin Brothers Partnership,” who recently closed the Amin’s furniture store at 1712 N. Date St.
County Commission Chairman Jim Paxon said the purchase price is in keeping with the board’s “penny pinching” goal of consolidating county offices at a good price. “We want to improve services for our citizens,” he said.
Amin Brothers Partnership was responsible for getting 1712 N. Date St. appraised as part of the purchase agreement. The appraisal was not included in county documents, but Paxon said the County’s purchase price is below the appraised value.
Offices at two buildings will be consolidated at the new location.
The County has rented 100 N. Date Street, owned by the Truth or Consequences Schools district, for $1 a year since 1977. Those offices include the Assessor, Clerk, Treasurer, Probate and Sierra County Regional Dispatch Authority.
County Manager Bruce Swingle said electricians refuse to work on the building’s old wiring system, which has been problematic for SCRDA’s needed upgrades. The basement was also condemned, he said.
“The old school is a splendid building. I think it ought to be a museum,” Paxon said. “But it is not serviceable.”
The 855 Van Patten building will be sold and the Human Resources, Administration, County Manager, Finance, GIS, indigent Health and Procurement offices will be moved to the new location.
According to a county employee, the metal building used to be a VFW hall, built in 1999. The County purchased it for $425,000 in 2009.
The County purchased what was Whitehead Automotive at 2501 S. Broadway several years ago, where the Sheriff’s Office and Road Department will remain.
