City Manager Morris Madrid is responsible for hiring and firing employees and made the decision to put Aragon on administrative leave and then to fire him. He did not answer an email requesting explanations, particularly if an investigation was conducted.
Madrid’s press release gave no details on the reason for Aragon being let go. His letter to Aragon putting him on paid administrative leave also gave no cause, but warned him to speak to no city employees or “customers”.
Aragon said he wished to give no comment on the matter. He is running for a local school board seat in the upcoming November 5 election.
Madrid’s press release states Lt. Erica Baker is interim-chief of police, with Michael Apodaca–coming out of retirement–to become chief on Oct. 1.
Aragon was made chief July 2018. He was put on administrative leave before, in early October 2018 for about a month, with no explanation from the city. Aragon also would not comment on this earlier incident.
Requests for investigation and complaint documents related to the earlier administrative leave were denied under Inspection-of-Public-Records-Act exemptions.
