The City Commissioners agree that Sierra County should run their local elections for municipal judge and city-commissioner seats, but the switch entails a major change in the election schedule.
The County would hold local elections on odd years, not even years as they are scheduled by the City of Truth or Consequences. The first notice of the opt-in ordinance contained a switch that would add one year and nine months to each City Commissioner’s term.
City Attorney Jay Rubin, in the interim between the first publication and the June 24 meeting, realized terms could be shortened three months instead of nearly two years to match the County voting schedule.
Mayor Pro-Tem Brendan Tolley said it was “a no-brainer we opt-in with shortened terms. It will have less impact than extending terms one year and nine months.”
City Commissioner Randall Aragon agreed. “Constituents think it is more ethical to shorten, not lengthen terms.”
The ordinance will therefore go to a second publication, which was approved unanimously by the board. The opt-in ordinance will probably go to public hearing at the second meeting in July.
