According to Sierra Vista Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Tom Ismond, who is overseeing and coordinating the hospital’s COVID-19 efforts, “between 25 to 35” people have been tested in Sierra County.
Some of those results are still outstanding, Ismond said, but so far none have come back positive. Sierra Vista Hospital, as with every hospital in the state, swabs onsite, sending the test swabs to three labs in the state. One is a state lab and the other two are TriCore and LabCorp.
The New Mexico State Veterans’ Home and Sierra Health nursing home have the option of having Sierra Vista Hospital swab their patients or they can arrange to have the New Mexico Department of Health do it, Ismond said, but all swab samples go to Sierra Vista Hospital where they are sent by special courier to one of the labs.
“No hospital in New Mexico is doing bed-side testing,” Ismond said. “All the swabs go to the labs.”
“It is going well here,” Ismond said. “We are well prepared.”
Although other parts of the country are running out of personal protection equipment for their healthcare workers, Ismond said it is not a problem in Sierra County. “We are still OK on supplies, but the virus hasn’t rolled in here yet.”
Locals aren’t panicking either. “There have been lots of questions,” Ismond said, “but no one is panicking. People have been very understanding.”
A couple of people have remarked to the Sierra County Sun that they are seeing a lot of RVs with out-of-state license plates parked on Bureau of Land Management land and around Caballo Lake. They wondered if there is an influx of people from overcrowded urban areas seeking rural hospitals that have plenty of supplies.
Ismond checked hospital records and found, “We are not seeing more out-of-state people here.”
He noted the state parks closed, “and there are probably some displaced people due to that.”
Ismond is hearing “that people are unsure if the hospital is open or not. We’ve reduced our clinic hours and elective services, but our emergency room is wide open.”
“We are here for you,” Ismond said.
