Yesterday was a federal holiday, Independence Day. When I was a high school student, living in New Hampshire over 50 years ago, I worked part time for a local business. If I chose to I could work on the Fourth of July at the rate of double-time pay. It was assumed at the time that any work done on a holiday was paid at least at the rate of time and a half.
I have been asking workers at various local businesses, open during the past holiday, if they are getting any additional benefits for working during the holiday. I have yet to find anybody receiving any extra pay or time off for working.
Have we fallen so far behind in terms of workers’ rights that we have utterly forgotten what used to be an assumed benefit: overtime pay for holidays?
It is up to us, the customers, to stand up for our local workers. Tell their employers that we, their customers, want to see their people treated right.
