Do you appreciate Sierra County Sun’s “clear, concise and honest reporting on what is being done in our name and at our expense,” as a charter subscriber describes our coverage? How about what another charter subscriber describes as our “captivating headlines . . . detailed reporting on municipal matters . . . conveniently delivered to my email inbox”?
Then why not show us a little love?
Purchasing an “alerts” subscription is a win-win way to support the Sun. You choose the kinds of stories you want delivered to your email inbox the moment they’re published online. The Sun’s first-year subscribers paid $60 annually for this convenience. We’re now offering customized alerts for $48 a year, when paid in advance. That’s less than a dollar per week to be notified of hot-off-the-presses local news.
If you prefer to be billed monthly or quarterly for your alerts subscription, no problem. Quarterly subscribers pay just $15 in advance for three months of service. Monthly subscribers pay only $6 a month in advance.
The Sun’s first-ever community survey revealed that that a good number of our charter subscribers (and even new or occasional readers) were prepared to pay a subscription price of as much as $120 a year. It was a tempting thought.
But we believe that everyone in Sierra County deserves to benefit from reliable news and information about their elected representatives’ actions and inactions. We decided against erecting a paywall on our website and charging a hefty sum for access. In keeping with our not-for-profit mission, we opted to make readership of the Sun’s website free. We decided to bank instead on the demonstrated willingness of Sierra Countians to step up and support valued community assets.
If you share our conviction that the free flow of reliable information about public affairs in Sierra County is vital to our community’s well-being, won’t you please make a tax-deductible donation to sustain the Sun’s newsgathering operations and keep readership free?
May we suggest you consider donating at least $25 annually? If you are among those loyal readers who considered the Sun a good value at $120 a year, we’ve made it easy for you to contribute that amount by setting up a recurring donation of $10 a month.
A contribution of any amount, however, will be deeply appreciated—either in addition to, or as an alternative to, purchasing an “alerts” subscription.

If you prefer to donate by check, please make the check payable to the Sun’s tax-exempt fiscal agent, Sierra County Public-Interest Journalism Project (SCP-IJP), and mail it to:

Thank you in advance for supporting public-interest journalism in Sierra County.
